If you were to ask payroll career professionals whether a payroll job is a rewarding occupation the answer would be a resounding yes. A payroll career is an ideal job for those with: a passion for numbers, keen attention to detail and an ability to multi-task, prioritise and meet strict deadlines. It can be a very rewarding career that gives payroll professionals an opportunity to develop their skills, progress their career path while providing reliable and stable work (as long as there are jobs there will be payroll jobs!).

Although payroll jobs vary depending on the skillset and seniority of the payroll professional in question. Payroll practitioners are primarily concerned with accurately calculating employees wages and ensuring that they are paid in a timely fashion. At a junior level, payroll administrators utilise payroll software to  create and maintain employees’ payroll records. They are responsible for ensuring the successful processing of routine payrolls, including the processing of commissions, bonuses, taxes and other deductions. Payroll specialists will do a similar job but with less standardised payrolls. At a senior level, payroll managers will manage an entire payroll department (ie. a team of payroll administrators and specialists.)

There are no minimum entry requirements for a career in payroll. Many employers will accept candidates will GCSE or A-level qualifications. However, any additional qualifications such as those available through professional payroll bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP) are highly desirable and may become necessary for career advancement.

Anyone looking to secure their first payroll job should tailor their CV to highlight their numerical competency and business acumen when discussing their training, qualifications, software skills and employment history.
